Panellingo 101

Intro to Panellingo

PANELLINGO d1*(Panel-Lingo or Panel language) – also PANO for short, is an attempt to establish a naming and classification system for panels as used in the audio-visual industry. This will be focused on but not limited to graphic novels and storyboards. I will also attempt to establish a modern understanding of panels and their uses in the real world. The study will be broken into three major parts: Understanding Panels, Naming and Calcification Use of Panels

  • Understanding panels will be an introduction to panels, their history and a slight overview of their uses. The study will be based on works already carried out by Scott McCloud and Will Eisner. By no means am I trying to challenge their views rather taking it another step further to help bring some more light to their studies. Their studies are extensive enough and I delve deeper only on specific sections that will help establish a naming system for Panels.
  • Whether we know it or not our minds breaks down information into little fragments in time and space. These pieces are then processed together to find relationships that create meaning according to McCloud. It is these fragments that I am interested in. How do we name each fragment? The only way researchers could understand the human genome was to first break apart the genes and then name each chromosome. In storyboarding and graphic novels each slide or page is a gene and the Panels are the chromosomes.
  • Use of Panels will use examples from published works ranging from independent artist to more renowned artists from Marvel, DC comics and others.
